Should I Walk, Run or Jog?

Posted in by Dr. Triglia on the June 18th, 2007

I’m asked this question quite frequently. The answer is, as in many matters, It Depends!

It depends on many different factors, however, if you have not exercised in a while (30 days or more) here is my reccomendation:

1. March in place for 60 seconds
2. Perform 3 Knee to Same Shoulder - 3 times each
3. Pull your foot up behind you as if you are trying to tuouch your heel to your buttocks
4. Use a stop watch and wallk for 5 minutesd only
5. Repeat steps 1-3

At this point your workout should be about 10 minutes long. You should continue to add 5 minutes to your walking time until you have worked your way up to 35-40 minutes of walking 3-4 times per week.

If, let’s say when you are at 15 minutes of walking and the next day you are sore, stay at 15 minutes for 2 or 3 days. When the soreness is gone add the next five minutes.

Yes, this will take some time and a little patients, which most of us don’t have, but this way you’ll have a far less chance of injury and a program you can LIVE with.
